Wondering what to do in your music room for Valentine's Day? In this blog post, I'm detailing three different ideas that could work in a “typical” classroom, or in a socially distanced classroom!
#1: Foam heart rhythm writing
Recently, I found these foam hearts on Amazon:

I realized that they could be really fun for a rhythm writing activity! Students could work in partners, small groups, centers, or individually, to choose four hearts. First, they could say their pattern with words. Then, they could say their pattern with rhythm patterns. For example, this pattern could be said as “ti-ti ti-ti ti-tika ti-ti.”

Here is the link to the hearts on Amazon; this is a referral link.
The only downside is that with this particular set, I couldn't find any hearts that would be “ta.” However, you can keep scrolling to sign up to receive versions for free in Seesaw and Google Slides, for ta and ti-ti, as well as tika-ti!
#2: Post Office
This free activity is super fun for first and second grade! Print the cards onto cardstock (enough for each student or small group), and you can even give them a mailbox, like shown in this picture:

You can say, clap, or play each pattern, and then they have to find that card and put it into the mailbox! It's a great game for audiation and rhythm identification!
#3: Valentine's Day Choice Boards
If you are virtual or socially distanced, these musical choice boards are perfect this time of year! Students can come to music class with their own device and headphones, and choose what they'd like to do! If your students are not 1:1, you could project one of the boards onto your interactive white board, and have students choose as a class! Here are a few images from the set; click any of the pictures to see it in my store.
